The National Board of Antiquities preserves Finland's material cultural heritage and environment and collects and distributes knowledge of them. The Board is also a cultural and research institution, which supports the work of Finnish museums and related research.

As a preservation authority, the Board is responsible for the protection of antiquities, built heritage, cultural-historically valuable environments, and cultural property.

The National Board of Antiquities participates in the activities of the European Union by providing expertise and information and acting as a partner in certain projects. Key tasks include providing information on programmes and measures, which are related to the cultural heritage, and participation in national and international projects carried out with EU support.

The Helsinki City Museum is a diverse databank of Helsinki history, where visitors can delve into their roots and cultural background. The museum has remarkable collections consisting of around one million historical objects, art works and photographs. The main themes of the museum's research activities are Helsinki history, urban ethnology and archaeology. An especially important task for the City Museum is to preserve the architectural heritage of Helsinki by making inventories and reports and giving expert statements about restoration and conservation issues. The results of the museum's work are presented in several yearly publications as well as in eleven museum exhibitions, which open many different perspectives into Helsinki's history.
