GUEST HOUSES IN THE NETHERLANDS, XVI-XIXTH CENTURIES

Marie-Christine ENGELS, historienne, agence gouvernementale de l'architecture, Pays-Bas

As far as medical history in Europe is concerned, coverage has mainly been concentrated on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The researchers often had a medical background and their subject was generally limited to the history of persons who played an important role in the discoveries in medical science. The architectural history by architects and art historians received much attention too. the last decades historians try to provide a more overall picture by integrating these kinds of research and giving at the same time attention to the more socio-economic aspects of the day to day life in the hospitals from medieval times onwards. A good overview of the current state of research is offered by Mary Lindemann, Medicine and Society in Early Modern Europe, Cambridge University Press 1999. In my fifteen minutes I will give a short overview of the history of the general and more specialised hospitals in the Northern Netherlands, from medieval times until the nineteenth century based on my own research and, as far as possible, I will compare the Dutch situation with the situation elsewhere in Europe.

Literature : there are several overall studies on Dutch hospitals worth to be mentioned. For the medieval and early modern period the classic study of A. Querido, Godshuizen en gasthuizen (Amsterdam 1960) is still valid. Other useful overviews are offered by G.T. Haneveld, Oude medische gebouwen van Nederland, (Amsterdam 1976) and J.T.M. van der Heyden, Het ziekenhuis door de eeuwen. Over geld, macht en mensen, (Rotterdam 1994). Apart from this there are various interesting local studies, among which very recent ones.
