History :The hospice for the Blind was founded thanks to a legacy
from the Baron de Ghendt de Lenglentier. In 1855, the architect
Cluysenaar handed over a U-shaped building comprising a ground floor
and a first floor.
In 1957, extensions were added and the facades "modernised".
Between 1991 and 2000, the architect Boelens supervised a comprehensive
internal refurbishment.
Over a period of time, its dedication to the blind or partially
sighted elderly was phased out.
Architecture :
The present building was designed in the Neo-Tudor style by the
architect de Cluysenaar.
The original two-storey building was U-shaped, with facades topped
by crenellations. A central chapel fills the complete height of
the building with three bays and is surmounted by an octagonal belfry.
The rear facade overlooking the rue du Remblai is striking .. because
of its restrained style.

Histoire :
L'hospice pour Aveugles est fondé grâce à un
legs du Baron de Ghendt de Lenglentier. L'Architecte Cluysenaar
livre en 1855 un bâtiment en forme de U, se développant
en rez-de-chaussée et un étage.
En 1957, on assiste à l'adjonction d'extensions et à
la "modernisation" des façades.
De 1991 à 2000, restructuration intérieure complète
avec l'intervention de l'Architecte Boelens.
A l'issu de celle-ci, l'établissement a conservé sa
destination d'hébergement médicalisé pour personnes
âgées, mais sans conserver sa spécificité
pour aveugles et mal-voyants.
Architecture :
La présente œuvre de Cluysenaar est de style Néo-Tudor.
Le bâtiment initial se développait en forme de U sur
deux niveaux, avec façades couronnées de creneaux.
Une chapelle centrale occupe toute la hauteur du bâtiment
sur trois travées et est couronnée par un clocher
octogonal. La façade arrière vers la rue du Remblai
est saisissante de sobriété.
