History
Duodecim (Finnish Medical Association founded by Finnish-speaking
doctors) commissioned the Takaharju sanatorium. The Takaharju sanatorium
was Finland's first sanatorium, even though few months later the
Nummela sanatorium was completed by other Finnish Medical Association
(Swedish-speaking doctors). The Takaharju sanatorium was designed
by architect Onni Törnqvist and built in Punkaharju in eastern
Finland in 1903.
Architecture:
On the basis of the demands of the latest treatment methods Onni
Törnqvist designed the Takaharju sanatorium which was at the
time conspicuously rational and clear. The T-shaped ground plan
of the sanatorium is made up of three wings. The central building
and the wards are linked with open-air wings. This creates a pavillion-like
impression. The wards open toward the southwest and sunlight. These
were the features, which later can be found in many functionalism
hospital buildings. The Takaharju sanatorium is a rare example of
an early sanatorium building in Finland and its simplified architecture
is exceptional of its time.

Histoire :
