History:
In 1830, the architect PARTOES converted the old monastery of the
Alexian Brothers founded in 1368 into a hospice, regrouping twenty
foundations for elderly women, previously accommodated in houses
belonging to the old Grand Béguinage (Hospitia XX in Uno).
This is a twin quadrangle with rooms distributed on each side of
the corridor.
In 1975, most of the buildings were demolished to make way for an
establishment that met design requirements of the day for the care
of the aged and sound planning … and even architectural ….
practices.
In 1988, rather than demolish the remainder of the old building,
it was converted into dwellings.
Architecture:
In the neo-classical style, austere and monumental, typical of the
aescetic design of the period, that society regarded as appropriate
to its care of the sick and poor.

Histoire :
L'ancien couvent des Frères Alexiens fondé en 1368
est transformé en 1830 par l'Architecte Partoes en un hospice
regroupant vingt fondations pour femmes âgées, qui
occupaient jusqu'alors des maisons de l'ancien Grand Béguinage
(Hospitia XX in Uno).
Il s'agit d'un double quadrilatère avec des chambres réparties
de part et d'autre du couloir.
En 1975 l'essentiel des bâtiments est démoli pour construire
un établissement conforme à la conception moderne
de prise en charge de la personne âgée, ainsi qu'aux
règles du bon urbanisme.
En 1988, ce qui subsiste de l'ancien bâtiment, plutôt
que d'être démoli comme initialement prévu,
est transformé en logements.
Architecture :
Architecture de style néo-classique austère et monumental,
typique de la conception sévère en vigueur à
l'époque, de la prise en charge par la société
de la misère et de la maladie.
